HAMLET AND ORESTES

1. The two characters, Hamlet and Orestes are regarded as traditional types.
2. Gilbert Murray tends not to compare play with play but simply character with character.
3. Orestes, the Greek traditional tragic hero occurs in seven tragedies whereas Oedipus in                                                                                                                      three and Agamemnon in four.
4. Shakespeare's second quarto of Hamlet was published in 1604.
5. Hamlet's first quarto dated 1603 is entitled as The Tragicall Historie of Hamlet Prince of Denmark.
6. Saxo Grammaticus in his great History of the Danes calls his hero Amlehtus or Amlodi.
7. In both the Greek and Northern versions the hero is the son of a king who has been murdered and succeeded on the throne by a younger kinsman.

            The younger kinsman and also a cousin who succeeds the throne in the Greek version.

            The younger brother and the younger kinsman in the Northern version.
10. In all the versions the hero is under the shadow of madness.

       Orestes.
